Hornchurch’s famous theatre has officially been given a Grade II listing to mark the Jubilee.

The Queen’s Theatre began when ‘Hornchurch Urban District Council’ purchased a derelict cinema on Station Lane, this cinema had previously been used as storage during the second world war. They converted it to a theatre and it opened in 1953, the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II.

But due to wear and tear the the building was then replaced by The London Borough of Havering Council in 1975 and moved to the current location.

The theatre has won multiple awards during it’s life, including Most Welcoming Theatre (East region) in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and London Theatre if the Year Stage Award in 2020

With over 8 productions per year, we have always thought that Hornchurch is very lucky to have the theatre around the corner and we understand why the building has been officially been made a listed building
