A WW2 Spitfire that served on Hornchurch Airfield is about to go up for auction and could be yours for the low, low price of £4.5 million

The aircraft, a Supermarine Spitfire Mark LF IXb known as MH415, was constructed at Castle Bromwich Aeroplane Factory in 1943.

One of the famous victories of the MH415 was in 24th September 1943, when the MH415 claimed a FW-190 ‘victory’ north-west of Amiens in France whilst being flown by F/O Desmond F. Ruchwaldy during ‘Ramrod 242’, a mission to escort 12 Mitchell bombers detailed to attack the Amiens Marshalling Yards.

In August 1943 it was then stationed at Hornchurch Airfield, before being used by RAF Squadron 222 until 1945

After it was retired, the plane made a trip to Hollywood where is starred in ‘The Longest Day’ in 1962 and ‘Battle of Britain’ in 1969

This aircraft is a truly exceptional example being over 95% complete of original parts. MH415 stayed fully assembled (other than for shipping and maintenance) from its date of manufacture right through to the commencement of its restoration in 2015 (completed to airworthy 2021). A truly remarkable aircraft with documented WWII combat history
