Campaigning group Havering Cyclists have welcomed the news this week that as part of a TfL’s bailout deal with the government, £100m of funding has to be allocated to walking and cycling measures across London and Havering Cyclists has called upon Council Leader Cllr Damian White to redouble his efforts to secure Havering’s fair share.

Havering Cyclists Secretary Jeff Stafford said:

“Havering has lost out repeatedly on previous funding seeing other boroughs such as Enfield and Kingston getting funding for really decent cycling infrastructure. We believe that this is why Havering has been ranked bottom again this year in the Healthy Streets Scorecard.”

He continued:

“Following Cllr White’s commitment from August of last year to lobby for such funding, we feel that the instruction from the Department of Transport for TfL to spend at least £100m on walking and cycling measures, presents us with a real opportunity.

We want Havering to get its fair share in order to give Havering residents a real choice in how they make their journeys by implementing measures to make walking and cycling safer in the borough.

We stand ready to assist Havering council in any way that we can.”

Data* from TfL and cycle retailer Halfords confirms that across London we are seeing a significant rise in cycle ownership and use but most particularly in parts of London where safe cycling provision has been made.
